Thanks for sharing Ted. My experience has been almost identical over the past year. I've been applying for leadership-level Product Mgmt roles (which I've held at multiple companies in the past). I've applied for hundreds of jobs and refactored my resume more times than I can count. The response rate is nil. I've applied to a few jobs (3 or 4) that I was so uniquely qualified for, that I wondered if someone had used my resume as a template for the job posting. Nonetheless, no call back. Also, it doesn't seem to make any difference whether/not I tailor my resume for a specific position... there's no statistically significant difference in the response rate. IMO, there's a massive iceberg of recently laid-off talent lurking below the surface that's applying for technology and leadership roles. On top of that, VC's started tightening their purse strings 18 months ago, which meant that startups and early-stage companies aren't funding many of their non-core product development initiatives and are a kind of silently scaling back hiring. It's a similar story with R&D budgets at medium and large-sized companies... but that's more a function of the Federal Funds Rate influencing the cost of debt financing as well as a decrease in the inflation of equity prices and valuations, which consequently causes members of the Board to pucker their buttholes and request that C-levels reduce overhead and scale-back development on non-essentials. Anyways, that's the BS that I tell myself so that I don't feel terrible everyday. Until then, I'll keep applying, and simultaneously re-training myself for a new role. I wish you the best of luck finding your next position. Thanks again for writing this... I'm glad that it's not just me.
